SEO: Search Engine Optimization
When you’re making a site, you want google to put it on top. To do that, you need to have good content, other people linking to you, good meta data, and new content. Here’s what you do (what I’m about to undertake, too):
1) Keywords. These are what your site is about, e.g. “Manhattan street performers” or “subway busking” etc. You need to create several pages on each of your important keywords, which you can find by using Google Adsense. If you want to know more about how to generate the important keywords, email me.
2) Tags. Longer, unique things, like “where to go to see the best street performers” “what is music under new york.” Tags basically “categorize” your pages, so it’s okay to use whatever tags you like, as many times as you like in your site (as long as it’s to do with the content, of course).
3) Meta Title. This is a separate title, which the public doesn’t see, but which google does. E.g., one of my titles is “PB & Js With Adam Matta,” but the meta title is “Sandwiches With one of New York’s Most Famous Beatboxers, Adam Matta.” The second one is messier and not as catchy, but includes “New York,” “Famous Beatboxers” and “Adam Matta” in the title, which will help google.
4) Description. This tells people what your page is about. Don’t use your keywords in the description. I don’t know why, but just don’t. It might be because google will think you’re spamming, or something.
How to write a post:
First of all, you’ve got to choose which keyword you’re going to use. Again, email me if you want tips on that.
1) Title. Something you want people to read; funny, catchy, interesting, whatever. Use a keyword in it.
2) Content. Use the keyword 3 or 4 times in the body of the text. This will get a little awkward and repetitive, so you’ll have to be creative in it. For example, google doesn’t read punctuation. So, for example, you could write “…because I always wanted to be a street musician. In New York, you have a better chance than anywhere else…” This means street musician in new york is written there, because google doesn’t read the period.
3) Meta Title. Like before, something with the keyword, not necessarily catchy.
4) Tags. What you think people might write in a search that will take them to your page. Why would someone want to know what you’re writing, and what would they search for? “How to organize search engine optimization” would be a good tag.
You want to write a few articles on each of the keywords. Then google will love you.
I need to write an article on subway busking, subway performer, subway performers, subway musician, street performer, street performers, street artist, street artists, street musician, street musicians, street busking, street buskers, underground art, musicians for hire, subway performance, and street performance. Wish me luck.
